This podcast looks at artificial intelligence (AI) threats to climate change from two perspectives: the information environment and how AI reduces the cost of producing disinformation to almost zero and makes it easier to distribute; and information infrastructure and the energy costs of AI.
Michael Khoo is the co-founder of Upshift Strategies, a communications strategy firm, and the policy co-chair for the Climate Action Against Disinformation (CAAD) Coalition. The CAAD coalition has focused on stopping social media platforms from over amplifying the marginal views of climate deniers, especially the ones paid by the oil industry. It advocates for transparency to expose the hidden ways that tech billionaires and fossil fuel companies attempt to create a false reality. The CAAD Coalition’s objectives are to focus on protecting the broader information environment and preventing the intermediaries such as social media and advertising companies from promoting and monetizing lies.
